Issues in the Design of Collaborative Systems: Lessons from ConversationBuilder
نویسندگان
چکیده
The development and evolution of the ConversationBuilder (CB) generic collaboration environment has now been proceeding for four years. In this time we have learned many lessons concerning issues in the design of collaboration support environments. In this paper we reeect on our experiences, draw out these lessons, and discuss how we are adapting future versions of CB. In particular we discuss the pervasiveness of collaboration support, introduce four factors aaecting the design of CSCW systems | openness, exibility, activeness and data | and discuss how the user interface, collaboration and systems support layers of CB have been been designed to accomodate each of these, the ways in which we have failed, and future directions.

This paper describes a Bull US Applied Research Laboratory project to build a collaborative inspection and review system called Scrutiny using ConversationBuilder from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. The project has several distinct aspects: technology oriented research, prototype building, experimentation, and tool deployment/ technology transfer. Described are the design of the...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Long-term Care Programs; Comment on “Financing Long-term Care: Lessons From Japan”
The need for long-term care (LTC) represents a “new social risk,” one that overlaps with and complements systems of care that pre-date such programs, complicating LTC program design. This commentary expands on Ikegami’s discussion of how these structural factors must be accommodated, as well as historical and cultural factors that influence public expectations of such a...
متن کاملLessons and Challenges for Collaborative Information Seeking (CIS) Systems Developers
The developers of collaborative information seeking (CIS) systems face many unique challenges, above and beyond the issues raised by traditional single-user information systems. We present lessons derived from the general area of collaboration, as well as from information seeking domain, which can help one understand various design considerations for developing a CIS system. A number of challen...
متن کاملDISTRIBUTED AND COLLABORATIVE FUZZY MODELING
In this study, we introduce and study a concept of distributed fuzzymodeling. Fuzzy modeling encountered so far is predominantly of a centralizednature by being focused on the use of a single data set. In contrast to this style ofmodeling, the proposed paradigm of distributed and collaborative modeling isconcerned with distributed models which are constructed in a highly collaborativefashion. I...
